BNDES International Piano Festival brings the great winner of the 2011 Tchaikovsky Competition

Young Russian pianist is invited to play in Brazil by the Festival after winning First Prize in Moscow last July

Daniil Trifonov, the 20 year old pianist ultimate winner of the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow last July, will play the opening recital of the Festival in Theatro Municipal of Rio de Janeiro. Notwithstanding his tight agenda throught 2013, Trifonov could make an exception among his countless commitments and will be in Rio for the recital on Sunday, November 27. Highly praised by Martha Argerich (“technically incredible” (…); “incredible is also his touch, a mixture of tenderness and the demonic element”), Trifonov will perform a programme with works by Chopin, Schubert, Schumann, Paganini and Liszt. A serial prize winner at the most prestigious competitions in the last two years – he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Arthur Rubinstein Competition/2011 and was Best Chopin Interpreter/2010 – Trifonov has been invited to play with great orchestras and conductors (check his full biography and the Rio recital programme). A hint from an updated version of his agenda: he will debut with the Israel Philharmonic in December under Zubin Mehta. In January follows a tour with the Vienna Philharmonic and Valery Gergiev, together with his Paris debut playing at Salle Pleyel. In 2012 Trifonov will perform in Europe, Asia and the United States.

In early October the  New York Times  reported the audience frenzy at Trifonov’s concert with the Mariinsky Orchestra in Carnegie Hall. Below you will find a sample of his mastery playing Liszt’s Mephisto Waltz at the Tchaikovsky Competition.
